This happened a few weeks ago but there is so much music news out there it’s hard to stay on top of everything. This was too interesting to pass up.
Grandmaster Flash has just become the first DJ to win the Polar Music Prize aka Nobel Prize for Music. Other winners from this award include Led Zeppelin, Metallica, BB King and others.
Flash had this to say:
“(I accepted this) in honor of every DJ, every rapper, every graffiti artist, and every breakdancer. This thing that I did had not existed before, and I am one of many where I come from. It ended up being called hip-hop, taking the drum break from pop, rock, jazz, blues, funk, disco, R+B, and using duplicate copies of records. I would take one section and repeat it over and over again.”
Motorhead redid a classic Metallica song and are streaming it at Soundcloud. I couldn’t find the actual link but our friends over at Hennemusic have it. Check it out
This is one of the songs on their upcoming album titled Under Cover which they cover songs by The Ramones, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Bowie and others. The tracks were recorded during various studio sessions between 1992 and 2015.
Last Friday night it was Metallic night at AT&T Park, Home of the World Champion San Francisco Giants. It was the first ever night at the Yard and it was beautiful one. Not only did James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett play the National Anthem on their custom made guitars (with “SF” on them) but Lars threw out the first pitch. You could also bid on the two custom made guitars which were signed by all 4 members of the band. The funds from the auction will get split between The Giants Community Fund and The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation.
OK, I’m a huge SF Giants fan and of course love Metallica. Never thought there would be a combination of the two but it looks like its coming. Earlier this month they were at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 30th anniversary tour for fan club members only and their was some new clothing for sale. They aren’t for sale yet at their site yet but it’s coming. Pretty sick!

I don’t even like commenting on this but Metallica has launched a “limited edition iPod interactive jacket.” Um . . .yaaa. Metallica teamed up with Sessions on this jacket that has a built-in pair of speakers, an amplifier and illuminated control pad on the outer sleeve. Your iPod or iPhone plugs in and is safely tucked away in a waterproof compartment. Oh and the jacket also has Metallica graphics including the Death Magnetic photo inside the liner and the M4 logo. And if that wasn’t enough you can put the hood up for added bass. The jacket is limited to 800 and will be coming out this Autumn. You can make reservations at Metallicas MetStore until June 8th but you have to give them 50% of the whopping $330 price tag. I don’t know about you but the metal heads I know wouldn’t even have $3.30 to spend on this.
