Bowie and Barbie

Ok this is just weird. The Barbie doll is getting a new look. For the 50th Anniversary of “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, Barbie is making a Ziggy Stardust doll. It’s $50 and will be marketed more towards adults. This doll looks nothing like Bowie except for the clothes. Mattel, the Barbie maker, was expecting parents to wonder if the doll is a boy or a girl. Not sure about you but she is VERY much a woman. These people that live under a rock just amazes me.

Music Quote TidBit – David Bowie

“I do value the respect I get from my contemporaries, but to have Oasis cover my song, to have Puff Daddy cover a song, to have Goldie come along to my gigs – that’s where my ego is at. To have my fellow musicians like what I do, that’s very cool.” – David Bowie

Peter Murphy Residency in NY

I wish I could head over to New York for these shows. Beginning August 2, 2019 Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) is beginning an 11 show residency at Manhattan club Le Poisson Rouge. There is a schedule of the music he’ll play at each show. The first eight shows he’ll play renditions of eight of his nine studio albums. Then the next show will be his greatest solo hits, then a show of Bauhaus music then ending with a Tribute to David Bowie. Should be a pretty amazing show. Here’s the schedule:

Aug 2: Should The World Fail To Fall Apart
Aug 3: Love Hysteria
Aug 5: Deep
Aug 8: Holy Smoke
Aug 9: Cascade
Aug 10: Dust
Aug 12: Ninth
Aug 13: Lion
Aug 15: Greatest Hits
Aug 16: Bauhaus’ Mr Moonlight
Aug 18: Tribute to David Bowie

This is one of the songs on their upcoming album titled Under Cover which they cover songs by The Ramones, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Bowie and others.  The tracks were recorded during various studio sessions between 1992 and 2015.

Under Pressure – Vocals Only

It was 1981 when Queen were recording their album ‘Hot Space’ in Switzerland and David Bowie was recording music for the movie Cat People that the great song ‘Under Pressure’ came about. Bowie stopped by to visit Queen with the intention of adding vocals to the song Cool Cat. Freddie Mercury and Bowie were messing around with some songs when Bowie said, let’s just write a song. 24 hours of wine and cocaine brought on these vocals for Under Pressure. The scene is described in the book “Is This the Real Life?”

“We felt our way through a backing track all together as an ensemble,’ recalled Brian May. ‘When the backing track was done, David said, “Okay, let’s each of us go in the vocal booth and sing how we think the melody should go–just off the top of our heads–and we’ll compile a vocal out of that.” And that’s what we did.’ Some of these improvisations, including Mercury’s memorable introductory scatting vocal, would endure on the finished track. Bowie also insisted that he and Mercury shouldn’t hear what the other had sung, swapping verses blind, which helped give the song its cut-and-paste feel.

Here are the amazing vocals!

Bowie is Done!

Reports are that David Bowie has officially retired. The last time Bowie played was about 4 years ago when he did a few songs at the BlackBall charity concert in New York. That was even after he had a heart attack during his 2004 Reality tour.
