I’m definitely going to see Elton John’s movie ‘Rocketman’ in the next few days. Unfortunately what I’ve been reading about the movie is that it’s more fantasy than real. Characters breaking out in song and dance and the timeline being all over the place. While that’s a bummer I’m sure it will be a fun movie to watch.
This Friday was the start of a four-part docuseries on Showtime about the Wu-Tang Clan. It’s called ‘Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men and traces the early beginnings of Wu-Tang from the Staten Island projects and through the albums and solo albums. Check it out if you can.
Well you knew it was coming. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia and Universal Music are working together to bring us Amy Winehouse’s life and career.
“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can,” said Kapadia.
I feel like this movie’s going to be a mess….much like she was.
I think I heard about this before but never thought it would go anywhere. Lenny Kravitz will play the great Marvin Gaye in movie by Julien Temple, who directed the Sex Pistols movie ‘The Greatest Rock N’ Roll Swindle’. This will be Lenny’s first leading roll. No word on when it will be coming out.
Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Ringo Starr are creating a musical called ‘Hole in the Fence’. Both of the came up with the idea on the script based on their own childhoods of kids who form a band in a depressed mining town. They both will serve as songwriters and executive producers. No word on when it’s coming out.
Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew announced at the Sundance Film Festival the group is back together. Campbell was at the Sundance Film Festival since he appeared in a short film.
Some of Campbell’s comments:
“I just can’t wait to just start practicing. That’s going to be a blast.”
“We’re going to perform the songs and everybody’s going to be excited,” he said. “Some of the older people of our generation will be able to tell their kids, `You’re staying home tonight, we’re going to see 2 Live Crew and shake our booty!'”
Director Cameron Crowe said his documentary on Pearl Jam will debut in September. Pearl Jam gave him 18-20 hours of footage to go with the other stuff Crowe shot in 2009 and 2010. That should be a great one.

Beats By Dre, Jimmy Lovine and Dr. Dre, are partnering up with Chrysler for their 2012 Chrysler 300S. They will help Chrysler’s engineer design to tune the 10-speaker sound system which will be the first model to have the new system.
Duran Duran have hired on David Lynch to direct their new concert film for the second season of ‘Unstaged’. Lynch says he will have some cool features such as “choose your cam” and “All of Us Now” which will encourage fans to upload pictures of body parts that will later be made into a collage. The show will be streamed live from LA on YouTub on March 23.
Another Bob Marley documentary is in the works and it’s being done with the approval and help of Ziggy Marley and family. Ziggy selected director Kevin MacDonald who’s done movies such as ‘The Last King of Scotland, ‘One Day In September’ and ‘Touching the Void’ (now that sounds like a good time!!). Ziggy said in a statement:
“We went to Kevin initially as an acclaimed documentarian but what has been most important to the family is his obvious passion for and interest in my father’s life as a musician and person.”
MacDonald says: “What made Bob tick is probably unanswerable but viewers will certainly feel that they know him a little better after seeing our documentary. I am grateful to the Marley family for entrusting me with their heritage.”
The movie should be out on May 11th which is the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s death.
Well they won’t be together in the movie but Clint Eastwood is going to produce and direct the remake of A Star is Born starring Beyonce. This will now be the third remake of this movie with the original being in 1937, then the remakes in 1954, 1976 and now this one.
Freddie Mercury is finally getting a movie made about his incredible life. I don’t know what to think of when hearing that Sacha Baron Cohen is going to star in the movie. Queen guitarist Brian May said they will begin shooting later this year with a release date in the autumn of 2012.
Creation Records out of the UK are having a documentary made about their rich history in music. The film is called ‘Upside Down’ and will feature interviews with Noel Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie and the founder Alan McGee. The label was shut down in 1999 but had some pretty good bands as part of their family:
Oasis, Primal Scream, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub, The Jazz Butcher and many others.
The film will be screening sometime next year at various international film and music festivals.
