The White House Record Collection

I read in Rolling Stone about the awesome record collection that Obama now has access to in the White House. Stored in the basement is the official White House Record Library which apparently has a few thousand records from the likes of Santana, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Isaac Hayes, Elton John, the Cars, Barry Manilow. More specifically Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones Let it Bleed, the Ramones Rocket to Russia, the Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica and the Flying Burrito Brothers The Gilded Palace of Sin.

Back in the days of the Nixon administration the RIAA thought the White House shouuld have records and books and contributed about 2,000 LP’s. Unfortunately it was stuff like Pat Boone, the Carpenters and John Denver. Not that that music isn’t good but c’mon. In 1979 the great producer John Hammond convened a new commission to update the list during the Carter administration. Then on January 13, 1981 the LP’s, each in a sleeve with a presidential seal were given to Jimmy Carter. The collection just sat in the hallway just long enough until Ronald Reagan took office. Then they were moved to the basement. Some say it was Nancy Reagan that moved them out but who knows. Obama hasn’t commented yet whether he will bring them up and listen to them but they should sound great since they haven’t ever been played.

Live Nation/Ticketmaster Merger Update

Today the merger was brought before the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights and the Chicago music scene was in the center of it all. Live Nation chief executive Michael Rapino said that Live Nation only puts on 16% of the concerts in Chicago compared to the 29% that is put on by Chicago-based concert company Jam Productions.

Jerry Mickelson, owner of Jam Productions who is testifying against the merger states “U2 doesn’t call us. Shakira doesn’t call us. Coldplay doesn’t call us. They dominate the arena level. They control and have all of the outdoor amphitheaters… and with House of Blues (which Live Nation owns), they are taking over the lower-level theater business as well.”

However there are supporters out there including Seal, Shakira, Journey and Eddie Van Halen. Seal said “Anything that can strengthen the link between music creators and music lovers has my support. I believe the combined company will achieve that by aligning resources, talent and services.”

This is gonna get nasty FOLKS!

Rod Stewart at Daptone Studios – Maybe

So Rod Stewart has a session booked at the Daptone Studio this last Friday but it might not happen. The Daptone Studios were broken into recently and a whole bunch of shit was stolen. A partial list of what was taken:

Fender Super Guitar Amp in case, Fender Deluxe Guitar Amp, A whole bunch of headphones and wires, HP laptop computer, One Desktop MacIntosh Computer, One Purple Audio API style lunchbox with four Purple Audio Biz mic pre-amps, 2 Yamaha NS10 monitors, Vintage Harmony Rocket Guitar, One steel string acoustic guitar, Martin Tenor sax in a gig bag, Technics 1200 turntable, Ion USB turntable, Teac Receiver/stereo amp.

And that’s the small list of what’s missing. What’s even worse is they didn’t have insurance so they have to bite the big one themselves. If anyone wants to help

NIN and Janes

Nine Inch Nails will tour later this year with Jane’s Addiction according to what Trent Reznor wrote on his website. He also said that these shows will be the last NIN shows for some time and that they will be “much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted” compared to his last tour “Lights in the Sky.” Then he ends with “It’s time to make NIN disappear for a while.” FINE

Michael Jacksons CRAP Up For Auction

Michael Jackson is auctioning off over 2,000 of his personal items this coming April. He’s hoping to raise millions to help with his financial situation. Its going to be held over 5 days at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and will have items ranging from his 1999 limousine, his Neverland Cast Iron Gates to his salt and pepper shakers. They say the sale is so extensive that a six-volume book has been printed to detail every lot. What a fool!

Pink, You’re Kinda Sweet

Ok, for some reason I have a soft spot for Pink. I can’t say I love her music but its catchy. I think I just like her rough and tough attitude. Well, she did something really cool. She donated $250,000 to the Australian bushfire victims where more than 200 people have lost their lives. She says “my heart goes out to all those who have suffered so much in these circumstances. There’s little anyone can do at such a long distance away but I wanted to make a tangible expression of support.” Gotta love her.
